Spiny Oyster

The Spiny Oyster is a warm water marine shellfish from the Gulf of Mexico and Southern California. This seashell is recognizable by its thick, oval-shaped shell and its characteristic bright purple-red color, caused by a natural pigmentation called "purpura" in the shell. Native American artisans use these shells for their traditional jewelry as well as to decorate objects such as pottery, baskets and musical instruments. Today, this shellfish is protected against overexploitation and overfishing. Read moreless
