  • Etymology : From the Greek «adamas» = invincibility. The name diamond was used for the first time by Pliny in -100.

The red diamond is the rarest of diamonds.
Worldwide, less than 30 diamonds are listed, certified as red diamonds and no more than 10 of more than 1 carat.

The red diamond can be considered the most expensive stone in the World. (price per carat)

The red color of the diamond is due to the presence of hydrogen and requires extreme pressures.

Price of red diamonds:
It’s the most expensive diamond.
In 1987, a red diamond “fancy purplish red” of 0.95 carat was sold for 880000 dollars, a record of 926.315 dollars per carat. This diamond is round in shape (shiny cut).
In 1996 a red diamond of 0.25 carat was sold 326800 dollars at the auction of Christies’s.
-  In 2013 the Argyle Phoenix red diamond, the largest red diamond then extracted from the Australian Argyle mine with 1.56ct, would have exceeded $2 million. The exact price remained confidential.

The largest known red diamond is the "Moussaieff Red Diamond".

It weighs 5.11ct. It was bought in 2011 for 8 million dollars.

This diamond is referenced as "fancy red".
It is a diamond of troïdia form of 5.11 carat (1.022g) which comes from a rough diamond of 13.90 carats.
It was found by a Brazilian farmer in the Abaetezinho River in 1990, in the region of Alto Paranaíba.
This red diamond was first owned by William Goldberg Diamond Corporation and was known as "Red Shield".
