Crocoite

  • Etymology : By reference to its colour, its name comes from the Greek "Krokos" = saffron.
  • Discovery: 1882 by Beudant

Rare mineral, especially in gem quality. The deposit giving the most beautiful parts is in Tasmania.

It is a secondary oxidation mineral formed in lead veins infiltrated by chromium-laden fluids.
