Spinelle

Spinelle
  • Translations : Spinel - Espinela - Spinello - Spinell - スピネル - 尖晶石 - шпинелево
  • Etymology : The origin of its name is uncertain: it would result from the Greek word "spark" or "the thorn".
  • Type localityMyanmar (Mogok), in Sri Lanka (Ratnapura), in Vietnam (Luc Yen's region), Tanzania, Tajikistan (Pamir)

It is a known and unknown stone. It is used for a very long time in jewelry, but it was confused always for the ruby.

At present Spinelle became a choice informed about " stone of investment ".
The main quality of Spinelle is its color. Colors the most wished on the market are the lively red, the pink, the orange and the blue says "cobalt blue", which is rarer. The more pale colors do not miss charm but are more affordable.

It is necessary to look for a very well cut stone. Whether it is on the markets of Sri Lanka, in Vietnam and especially in Myanmar, the size is optimized to gain weight, to the detriment of the brightness of the stone. We thus make re-cut all the spinelles which we select from these countries.
The spinelle possesses a good hardness what allows to use it in jewelry(jeweler's store) calmly.
As for quite different stone gemstone, the brightness will be favored by a big purity. But many enthusiasts like certain inclusions which give certain charm to gemstones!

The spinelle has the clear advantage to be a stone little handled gemstone. Only some spinelles can be treated. In particular, some spinelles red can be warmed to decrease a slightly too brown tint.

Its close chemical composition with the family of corundum (Sapphires and Ruby) allowed certain Mr Verneuil, to finalize a technique of synthesis of spinelles. The spinelles of synthesis Verneuil is created in Laboratory since 1920. They do not have complétement the same chemical composition as the natures. A gemmologist will make the difference.
This synthetic spinelles floods the market of stones gemstones and must be indicated as such.

Spinelle was used for many fineries, by thinking of using of the Ruby. The most famous confusion is the one of the Ruby of Prince Noir, on the British Imperial Crown. This 170 carat "Ruby" was considered for a long time as the biggest Ruby in the World, until it is identified as a spinelle.
