Fluorite

  • Etymology : Of the Latin " fluere " = pour.
  • Discovery: 1797 by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione

Fluorite or Fluorine is the most common natural fluoride.

This mineral species always amazed by the variety of its colors. It received several names (Spatum vitreum, Calx fluorata) before bearing the name of Fluorine, or Fluorite. (According to the current terminology, all gemstones adopted the ending "ite", giving up that "ine", except some exceptions).

The commercial and industrial term of the Fluorite is Spathfluor.
 Its structure cristallographique, very simple, was determined by William a hour. Bragg, by diffraction of the X-rays.

The term "fluorescence" derives from " fluorite ".
Fluorite is looked for by the collectors for its variety of tints.
