Andradite

  • Etymology : In honor of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva Brazilian mineralogist.
  • Discovery: 1868 by James Dwight Dana

The andradite garnet has different names, depending of is formula:

  • Demantoid : it is the more valuable garnet, with a yellow greenish color, to a deep green color. Its color is coming from Cromium;
  • Melanite : it is a black garnet with a high level of titanium;
  • Topazolite : its color yellow brownish is simlar as topaz.
