Garnet

Garnet

  • Etymology : Of the Latin " granatus " = seed.

In the Middle Ages, the garnet was called "carbuncle", of the Latin "carbunculus", small braises.
When we describe the " color garnet ", we imagine generally the red color. But the garnet exists of all the colors. One of the most sought  garnets is the green garnet " démantoïde ", a variety of garnet grossulaire.

The garnet indicates a family of minerals of the group of nésosilicates  (classe VII de la classification cristallochimique).

The chemical composition of garnets varies between certain poles of chemical composition Iron - Aluminum (Fe-Al) and Magnesium - Iron - Manganese ( Mg-Fe-Mn).

Fifteen terms are associated to the garnet according to Internatioanal Mineralogical Association: Almandin, Andradite, Caldérite, Goldmanite, Grossulaire, Hibschite, Katolite, Kimzeyite, Knorringite, Majority, Morimotoïte, Pyrope, Schorlomite, Spessartite, Uvarovite. there are varieties with intermediate compositions.

Garnets are constituents of certain metamorphic rocks and secondary minerals of certain igneous rocks.

Because of their hardness, garnets are used in jewelry - jewelry.

Legends:

It is carried by a legend stemming from the Greek mythology that the Garnet became a symbol of love, but not any love ....

The most powerful Zeus the gods had with Demeter, goddess of the Earth Mother and of the fertility, a girl: Persephone. A day when she( had a walk, she was kidnapped by Hades who took him( in the kingdom, Hell.

Hades offered to Persephone a grenade, a security of the promise of his fast return. While she crunched a seed, she understood that she could not leave anymore and was condemned to cross a third of the year with her husband and the rest of the time on the surface with her mother, so creating the cycle of the seasons.

The pomegranate in Greek " granatus " gave its name to the garnet, for the resemblance of these seeds with the crystals of the stone. Since the Garnet, associated with this fruit, symbolize unconditional love, to transport you in one other world...
